Patriots Release Recent Second-Round Draft Selection

Press Release: Patriots Waive Wide Receiver Tyquan Thornton

Foxborough, MA – The New England Patriots have officially waived wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, as confirmed by sources close to the team. The decision comes after a disappointing performance from the 2022 second-round draft pick, who began the season as a Week 1 starter but has since been a healthy scratch in recent games.

In his three-year NFL career, the 24-year-old Thornton has recorded just 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns. This season, he has contributed minimally, with only four catches for 47 yards over six games. Thornton’s notable speed, highlighted by a 4.28-second 40-yard dash prior to the 2022 NFL Draft, failed to translate into impactful on-field performance, averaging only 9.9 yards per reception. His slender build at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds has led to significant injury issues, resulting in his participation in only 28 of 44 games since joining the league.

Following Thornton’s departure, the Patriots’ wide receiver corps now includes Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, Ja’Lynn Polk, Kendrick Bourne, Javon Baker, and K.J. Osborn on the active roster, with Braylon Sanders and John Jiles on the practice squad. Although the team typically outfits five to six receivers for games, recent weeks have seen them consistently utilizing only four or five.

Additionally, cornerback Alex Austin remains on injured reserve, while defensive tackle Christian Barmore is on the non-football illness list. Both players are eligible for activation after participating in practice.

As Thornton enters the waiver wire, he has the potential to be claimed by other teams before potentially signing to a practice squad if he clears waivers.
