Child Killed in Tip-Over Prompts Recall of Dania Furniture Bookcase

An Idaho-based furniture company, Dania Furniture, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued a recall for the Hayden bookcase following a tragic accident in 2023 that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old child. The bookcase is considered unstable if not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards. Roughly 940 of these bookcases were sold nationwide from November 2017 through February 2024.

The recalled bookcase, manufactured in Italy, features six storage cubbies, brown wood construction, three sliding doors, and measures 35.5 inches in width, 16 inches in depth, and 73 inches in height, with the product name located on a label on the back of each unit. Dania Furniture has received a report of the death of the 4-year-old child in August 2023.

The CPSC advises anyone with the Hayden bookcase to stop using it if not anchored to a wall and contact Dania Furniture for a free installation of a tip-over restraint kit. The company will also refund the purchase of any returned items. The STURDY Act, signed into law in December 2022 and effective in September 2023, requires the CPSC to revise safety standards for freestanding furniture, like dressers and bookcases, to prevent tip-over incidents that have resulted in numerous injuries and deaths.
