Atmospheric River Causes Heavy Rain and Snow in Pacific Northwest

A powerful atmospheric river is bringing more rain, snow, and strong winds to the already battered Pacific Northwest. The second predicted mega storm did not reach the “bomb cyclone” status, but is still causing significant damage and risks of flooding. Northern California is particularly at risk, with reports of flooded roads and the potential for up to 10 inches of rainfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Heavy snowfall is also expected in Washington Cascades and Northern Rockies. Power outages affected nearly 200,000 homes and businesses in Washington and Northern California. Some areas have already received over a foot of rainfall and significant snowfall. Venado, California has seen 17.4 inches of rain, while Soda Springs, California received 20 inches of snow. The National Weather Service is warning of dangerous flooding, rock slides, and debris flows in the region. Despite some relief in power outages, the Pacific Northwest is still experiencing the effects of the ongoing storm system.
