TSA Offers Travel Tips for Holiday Travelers
As the holiday travel season approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reminding passengers to stay vigilant with security protocols at airports. “Many travelers are so focused on reaching their destination that they overlook essential pre-flight steps,” said TSA officer Christopher Kirchein at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
TSA officers, including Philadelphia International Airport’s Aisha Hicks, noted that a significant number of travelers forget that items like knives and other weapons are strictly prohibited through security checkpoints. “It’s shocking how often we encounter passengers carrying knives,” Hicks added.
To streamline the travel experience, the TSA offers the following critical reminders for travelers preparing to navigate security screening:
- No Beverages Allowed: Drinks such as water, energy drinks, or soda cannot be brought through security; travelers can bring empty bottles.
- ID Ready: Always have your identification ready for inspection at the checkpoint.
- Empty Your Pockets: Remove all items from pockets—including non-metallic items like tissues and lip balm.
- Firearm Protocol: Firearms must be unloaded and packed in a TSA-approved hard case, checked at the airline counter.
- Shoe Removal: Passengers are required to remove shoes during screening; wearing socks is advisable.
- Child Screening: Children under 12 can accompany parents through TSA PreCheck lanes, and those 75 and older may keep their shoes and light jackets on.
- Luggage Locks: Use TSA-compliant locks for luggage to avoid damage during inspections.
- Medications: Liquid medications are permitted but must be declared for separate screening.
- REAL ID: Travelers are encouraged to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license ahead of the enforcement date on May 7.
