President-elect Donald Trump has selected Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a one-term Republican from Oregon, to lead the Labor Department. Despite losing her reelection bid in November, Chavez-DeRemer has the support of Teamsters President Sean O’Brien and other Republican House colleagues. Trump praised her for working with both business and labor to support American workers and create opportunities for them. Chavez-DeRemer has a background in working with unions and has courted endorsements from various labor organizations. She is a cosponsor of a pro-union bill called the Protecting the Right to Organize Act. The Department of Labor oversees job safety rules, wage and hour standards, and unemployment insurance benefits. Trump is expected to direct the new labor secretary to roll back regulations seen as anti-business, including measures put in place by the Biden administration to expand overtime pay eligibility, consider environmental and social factors in employee retirement investments, and extend labor organizing rights to seasonal agricultural workers. Overall, Chavez-DeRemer’s appointment signals Trump’s commitment to supporting American workers and improving working conditions.
