Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey made it clear this week that her administration will not cooperate with federal authorities for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants under the Trump administration. Trump has promised the largest deportation effort in American history, costing an estimated $315 billion. Healey stated that the State Police will not assist in deportation efforts if requested by the Trump administration.
She highlighted the need to resist through various means such as using state authority, executive powers, and legislation to protect residents. Healey emphasized the importance of protecting citizens, states, democracy, and the rule of law. Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric has fueled fears of mass deportations that have not been seen in the US before.
As the Attorney General during Trump’s first term, Healey gained recognition for filing 96 lawsuits against the administration, winning about 77% of them. She stressed the importance of being prepared to lead and protect residents, regardless of how they voted in the election. Democrats across the country are gearing up to counter the incoming Trump administration, with some calling for special sessions and contingency plans to protect basic rights. Healey’s stance and determination to resist against mass deportations reflect a growing movement among Democrats to stand against Trump’s immigration policies.
