President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired general Keith Kellogg to serve as his special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine war. Kellogg, 80, is a Vietnam War veteran who served as chief of staff for the White House National Security Council during Trump’s first term. He has also co-authored a plan calling for a negotiated settlement and ceasefire in Ukraine, criticizing President Joe Biden’s approach to the conflict.
Kellogg’s plan includes arming Ukraine while requiring participation in peace talks, offering to delay Ukraine’s NATO membership, and providing sanctions relief to Russia. However, experts question the feasibility of this plan, as it contradicts Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s strategy and may not align with other officials in the upcoming Trump administration.
While Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine, details of his plan remain vague. His Vice President JD Vance suggested negotiations for a demilitarized zone between Russia and Ukraine, possibly involving territorial concessions by Ukraine. However, Ukraine insists on maintaining its sovereign territory and nullifying Russia’s annexation.
President-elect Trump has reportedly spoken with Russian President Putin about the conflict, but Russia denied the existence of the call. As the situation in Ukraine remains complex, Kellogg’s role as special envoy will be crucial in navigating diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war.
