The Sanchez family’s life was turned upside down when their son Zayden was diagnosed with leukemia and had to undergo treatment 1,100 miles away from home at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The family has been staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia since April, a safe and free place for families to stay while their children undergo medical treatment.
The first Ronald McDonald House was established in Philadelphia in 1974, inspired by the daughter of former NFL player Fred Hill who battled leukemia. The charity has since expanded to more than 400 houses and 270 family rooms worldwide, providing support to families facing medical crises.
Ronald McDonald Houses offer a range of services including transportation, meals, classroom space, support groups, and even salon services. The goal is to provide wraparound care for families dealing with a child’s illness and create a sense of community and hope among families facing similar challenges.
For the Sanchez family, the Ronald McDonald House has been a lifeline during Zayden’s treatment, providing practical support as well as a sense of comfort and belonging during a difficult time. Zayden’s resilience and positive attitude throughout his treatment have inspired his parents, and they are grateful for the support they have received from the organization.
The family expects to remain in Philadelphia until February as Zayden continues his recovery. Despite the challenges they have faced, they have found strength and gratitude in the community of care provided by the Ronald McDonald House.
