Romania’s ruling party poised for victory in election despite rise of far-right | Election Updates

Romania’s recent general elections have seen the left-wing Social Democratic Party maintain its majority in parliament, but facing a resurgent far-right opposition led by the Alliance for Uniting Romanians, which made significant gains with about 18 percent of the vote. The National Liberal Party and the Save Romania Union also secured significant portions of the vote, indicating a diverse political landscape in the country.

The election had the highest voter turnout in 20 years, with over 52.3 percent of eligible voters participating. Issues such as Romania’s deficit, its pro-European Union stance, and support for Ukraine were key factors in the campaign, as well as the rise of ultra-nationalist and anti-establishment parties challenging the status quo.

One of the surprising outcomes of the election was the success of hard-right populist Calin Georgescu, who unexpectedly won the first round of voting for the presidency. With affiliations to the Alliance for Uniting Romanians, Georgescu’s controversial views and support for figures like Vladimir Putin have raised concerns among voters.

Georgescu’s success has been linked to his effective use of the social media platform TikTok, where he has garnered a significant following. However, allegations of bot activity by pro-democracy organizations have sparked controversy over the legitimacy of his online support.

As the country braces for a second round of voting for the presidency, the political landscape in Romania remains contentious, with the choice between preserving democracy and returning to a pro-Russian influence at the forefront of voters’ minds.
