President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering dropping his nominee for Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, due to allegations about his personal and professional life. Instead, Trump may nominate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who served in the Navy from 2004 to 2010, for the position. DeSantis was previously considered for the role before Trump went with Hegseth. The transition team has entered into an agreement with the Department of Justice for background checks and security clearances for potential nominees. Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, would need Senate Republican support for confirmation, but allegations of sexual assault and personal misconduct have raised doubts about his candidacy.
Two other Trump picks for senior positions have already dropped out due to scrutiny – Chad Chronister withdrew from consideration to run the Drug Enforcement Administration and former Rep. Matt Gaetz dropped out of consideration for attorney general over allegations of sex with an underage girl. The Trump transition office and DeSantis’ office have not yet commented on reports of DeSantis potentially replacing Hegseth. Overall, the nomination process for top federal jobs under the Trump administration has been under intense scrutiny and speculation.
