The Sumner Tunnel connecting Boston Logan Airport and downtown Boston will be closed for renovations until August 5th, causing traffic diversions for travelers. The Chelsea Police Department warns against using Chelsea as a cut-through to avoid traffic, as it may lead to long delays and angry honks. Instead, drivers are advised to find alternate routes.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has provided five maps showing alternate routes for drivers affected by the tunnel closure. Drivers from East Boston going downtown will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and onto I-93. Those leaving Logan Airport going downtown will be rerouted in a similar fashion. Drivers leaving the airport to reach I-93 North will have to follow a specific route through Route 1A, Route 16, Tobin Bridge, and Rutherford Avenue.
Travelers heading south towards downtown on Route 1 are asked to divert to Route 1A in Revere at Bell Circle Rotary and then onto I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and I-93. MassDOT also warns of the closure of the Route 145 (Bennington Street) exit and advises following the local East Boston detour. For more information and detailed maps, visit the MassDOT website.
