A group of special education students and their teachers from a Maryland school were refused service at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Waldorf, leading to widespread criticism and backlash. The students, who have significant cognitive disabilities or autism, were on a field trip as part of their school’s community-based instruction program.
After the incident, Cracker Barrel executives met with district leadership, teachers, and parents to address the situation. The restaurant claimed that a staffing shortage led to poor communication and the closure of their dining room, resulting in the students being offered a to-go order. However, the students had to wait for an hour for their meals and ended up eating back at the school.
In response to the incident, Cracker Barrel removed three employees, including the general manager, and initiated an internal investigation with guest and employee interviews. The restaurant also expressed regret for falling short of their service standards and emphasized their zero-tolerance policy against discrimination.
The Cracker Barrel location in Waldorf received negative reviews on Yelp, prompting the website to disable reviews temporarily due to increased public attention. Despite the reviews being disabled, a protest organized by a parent of one of the affected students is set to occur at the restaurant. The protest has gained attention and support from individuals across the country.
