Stephen Paul Gale, a suspected serial rapist wanted in connection with two rapes in Massachusetts in 1989, was arrested in Los Angeles after a lengthy police chase. Gale, 71, was located driving a dark SUV in the Wilmington area and led police onto freeways before surrendering on Medical Plaza Drive in Westwood.
Gale was charged with aggravated rape and kidnapping in the 1989 Massachusetts cases and was recently identified through genetic genealogy in connection with a series of rapes in Boston from 1989-90. Known as the “Boston Strip Mall Rapist,” Gale had been on the run for years and was last seen in public in 2008.
The U.S. Marshals Office had offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to Gale’s capture. In May, they released a wanted announcement for him in connection with the 1989 case and for questioning in the Boston area rapes. Gale’s arrest was the result of a nationwide manhunt that had been ongoing for decades.
Gale’s capture brings closure to the victims of the 1989 cases and hopefully will bring justice to the other victims of his alleged crimes. The Los Angeles Police Department, along with federal authorities, worked together to finally apprehend Gale and bring him into custody for his alleged crimes.
