False headline declares Biden ’embodies the gospel’

A fabricated image circulating on social media claimed that The Gospel Coalition published an article stating that President Joe Biden exemplifies the gospel by pardoning his son, Hunter Biden. In reality, no such article exists on The Gospel Coalition’s website, and the outlet confirmed that the image is a hoax. Hunter Biden was pardoned by President Biden on December 1, months after being convicted of federal gun and tax charges. The claim misrepresented the actions of President Biden in relation to the gospel.

The alleged author of the fabricated article, “Russel Moore,” is likely a misspelling of theologian Russell Moore, who previously led the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and has written for The Gospel Coalition. Moore was appointed as the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today in 2022.

USA TODAY has debunked various false claims related to Hunter Biden’s trial and convictions, including inaccurate statements about President-elect Donald Trump’s response to the conviction, Hunter Biden’s prison sentence, and a video allegedly showing Hunter Biden using cocaine. The user who shared the post containing the fabricated image was contacted for comment but did not respond. The Gospel Coalition and Collin Hansen, editor-in-chief, confirmed that the claim was false. The fact-checking work of USA TODAY is supported in part by Meta’s grant.
