The future of Black women in America under Trump

The third season of the NATAL podcast, co-published by The Economic Hardship Reporting Project, shines a light on the ongoing struggle for reproductive justice faced by Black women and families in the wake of the potential return of a Trump presidency and the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Through intimate conversations with activists and reproductive justice leaders in the Deep South, NATAL explores the impact of restrictive abortion laws on Black communities, highlighting the disproportionate harm suffered by Black women and birthing people.

As the threat of Project 2025 looms large, executive producers Gabrielle Horton and Martina Abrahams Ilunga discuss the importance of centering Black voices and experiences in the fight for reproductive rights. By drawing on the rich history of Southern knowledge and organizing, NATAL aims to empower communities to navigate and resist harmful policies that threaten their access to essential reproductive care.

Looking ahead to a potential Trump presidency, Horton and Ilunga stress the importance of building strong care networks and collaborating to provide much-needed support for communities facing increasing attacks on their autonomy and well-being. Their hope for a future season of NATAL lies in expanding their storytelling capacities to engage and uplift marginalized voices through various formats and spaces, ultimately fostering connection, healing, and tradition.
