Michael Murray, a 37-year-old USPS employee from Lynn, pleaded guilty to theft of mail and government money in federal court. Between September 2022 and July 2023, Murray stole gift cards, cash, and checks totaling over $3,400 from hundreds of pieces of mail at USPS offices in Revere and Melrose. He also fraudulently generated and cashed postal service money orders for his own use, totaling over $5,100. Murray pleaded guilty to one count each of theft of mail matter by an employee and theft of government money and faces up to 5 years in prison for mail theft and up to 10 years for theft of government funds. He will be sentenced on Feb. 3. The case highlights the severity of theft within the USPS and the consequences that employees face for such crimes.
