Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale, a hidden gem in Los Angeles, offers a nostalgic escape from the bustle of the modern world. The roller rink, filled with neon lights, retro carpet, and disco balls, transports visitors back to different eras depending on their memories. For some, it’s the 70s or 80s, for others, it’s the 90s.
Owned by Dominic Cangelosi since 1985, the rink has become a cherished institution in Los Angeles. Cangelosi started events such as Rainbow Night in 1985, one of the first LGBTQ-themed skate events in the country, and hosted artistic skating competitions and countless birthday parties. He played the electric organ for over 60 years until the pandemic forced him to retire from the keyboard.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Moonlight Rollerway reopened to enthusiastic skaters, albeit with some changes. No hoodies are allowed to ensure that skaters can hear and prevent collisions. The staff, in striped referee jerseys, ensures the safety of all skaters, and while they can’t provide medical assistance, they can call an ambulance if needed.
The roller rink offers a break from the constant scrolling of screens, allowing visitors to focus on the joy of skating and being in the moment. The adrenaline of skating keeps smiles on people’s faces, at least until the pain in their quads sets in.
Moonlight Rollerway continues to be a beloved spot for both long-time roller skaters and newcomers alike, offering a unique and nostalgic experience in the heart of Los Angeles.
