Officials say Hamas paves the way for a potential cease-fire by dropping key demand

Hamas has given initial approval for a US-backed cease-fire deal in Gaza, dropping a key demand for an up-front commitment from Israel for a complete end to the war. The deal, proposed by Washington, includes a phased approach with a six-week full cease-fire, the release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the return of displaced people. Negotiations for the second phase would include the release of remaining hostages and prisoners, while the third phase would focus on reconstruction and the return of all hostages and bodies of dead captives. Hamas still wants written guarantees for continued negotiations for a permanent cease-fire. This could be the first pause in fighting since last November and could lead to further talks to end the devastating nine-month war. Previous negotiations stumbled over Hamas’ demand for a complete end to the war, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered to pause the fighting until Israel’s goals are met. This potential cease-fire deal may bring hope for peace and relief for the people of Gaza after months of conflict and loss.
