A police officer was wounded in a knife attack in the Champs-Élysées neighbourhood of Paris, with the assailant quickly being neutralized by authorities. The incident occurred in the 8th arrondissement, as police were responding to a call from officers securing a store. The attacker was prevented from taking further action, and is still alive.
This attack comes as the French capital is already on high security alert, just days before the July 26 opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, confirmed the incident and stated that the perpetrator was quickly neutralized by police officers.
This incident follows another recent knife attack where a French soldier was stabbed and wounded outside the Gare de l’Est train station in Paris. The assailant in that case was taken to a psychiatric hospital. Darmanin is currently serving as the Interior Minister in a caretaker role until a new government is formed following recent legislative elections.
The safety and security of Paris residents and visitors is of paramount importance, especially as the city prepares to host the upcoming Summer Olympics. Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the public and are remaining vigilant in the face of potential threats.
