Education Department provides employees with a $25,000 buyout in anticipation of upcoming layoffs.

The Department of Education is offering employees up to $25,000 to voluntarily resign ahead of an impending workforce reduction. This offer comes as President Trump has expressed his desire for Education Secretary nominee Linda McMahon to eventually “put herself out of a job.” The offer, made by the agency’s top human resources official, Jacqueline Clay, is available to employees who have been with the federal government for at least three years and have not received certain types of benefits in the last three years. Those who accept the buyout will have their resignations take effect on March 31. This move is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to reduce the federal workforce, with the president expressing his desire to immediately close the Education Department. McMahon, who is expected to be confirmed by the Senate, has acknowledged that only Congress can shut down federal agencies. The Department of Education has already experienced significant turnover since Trump took office. The offer of a voluntary separation incentive payment is the latest indication of the turmoil within the agency as major layoffs are anticipated in the coming weeks and months.
