Late Friday night, the westbound lanes of the Massachusetts Turnpike between Hopkinton and Westborough reopened after an emergency closure due to a potential sinkhole earlier in the day. The closure was prompted by unusual pavement cracking observed by a contract worker near an embankment at the Interstate 495 interchange. Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver stated that there was a risk of a major sinkhole developing, leading to the quick decision to close the road and begin emergency repairs. One westbound lane reopened around 4:30 p.m. with the remaining two lanes reopening at approximately 9 p.m. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation acted swiftly to ensure the safety of motorists and prevent any further damage to the roadway. The reopening of the westbound lanes brought relief to travelers and commuters who had been affected by the closure earlier in the day.
