A tragic event has occurred in Uganda as a young child has become the second victim of the Ebola outbreak recently announced by the health ministry. The country had confirmed 10 cases of the Sudan Ebola strain, with one being a nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital who sadly passed away. The deceased child, aged four and a half, was linked to the primary cluster of the outbreak in Kibuli.
Despite initial reports of containment, an additional positive case was detected at Mulago, leading to heightened monitoring and quarantine of 265 individuals who came into contact with the infected nurse. This is the sixth outbreak of Sudan Ebola in Uganda, for which there is currently no approved vaccine. However, a vaccination trial was launched earlier this month, with the World Health Organization praising the quick rollout in the midst of the epidemic.
Ebola is transmitted through body fluids, with symptoms appearing after an incubation period of up to 21 days. Uganda has had previous outbreaks, with the most recent one lasting four months and claiming 55 lives. The deadliest epidemic occurred in west Africa between 2013 and 2016, resulting in over 11,300 deaths. Overall, more than 15,000 people in Africa have died from Ebola in the past 50 years. The situation in Uganda serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of this deadly virus and the importance of swift and coordinated responses to contain it.
