Coastal Flooding Possible as Massachusetts Braces for Over 1 Inch of Rain Wednesday Night

Massachusetts residents should prepare for a rainy day on Wednesday, with the possibility of flooding in some areas. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies in the morning, with spot showers in the afternoon and widespread showers in the evening. Rain totals could measure between half an inch to 1 and a half inches, with some localized higher amounts. Boston could see half an inch to 1 inch of rain, while Worcester could see 1 to 1 and a half inches. Western Massachusetts, the Cape, and Islands could also see significant rainfall.

Strong winds are expected Wednesday evening, with gusts reaching between 40 to 55 mph, particularly near and southeast of Interstate 95. This could result in a storm surge of 1 and a half to 2 and a half feet in coastal communities on the south coast, potentially leading to flooding. While forecasters do not anticipate significant impacts, a Coastal Flood Statement or advisory may be issued.

The strong winds are expected to continue into Thursday, with the strongest gusts in the Worcester Hills and the Berkshires. Winds may prompt a Wind Advisory for higher elevations on Friday before dying down in the afternoon. Forecasters do not expect any new storms to develop over the next week following this week’s event. Residents are advised to stay informed of weather updates and be prepared for potential hazards.
