The National Security Agency has advised iPhone and Android users to regularly restart their devices to protect against cyber threats. The FBI, CISA, and MS-ISAC issued a joint cybersecurity advisory warning about the Medusa Ransomware, which uses a double extortion model to encrypt and threaten to release data if a ransom is not paid. Organizations are urged to implement strong security measures such as VPNs, multi-factor authentication, and keeping software up to date to protect against this threat.
Medusa Ransomware, which was first identified in June 2021, has impacted over 300 victims through phishing and other common techniques. It has shifted to an affiliate model where developers and affiliates collaborate to extort victims. To protect against Medusa Ransomware, organizations are advised to require VPNs for remote access, monitor for unauthorized access attempts, use long passwords, implement multi-factor authentication, keep software up to date, implement a recovery plan for data, segment networks, and monitor for abnormal activity.
If suspicious or criminal activity related to Medusa Ransomware is detected, individuals and organizations are encouraged to contact their local FBI field office, CISA’s Operations Center, or the MS-ISAC. The joint advisory is part of the ongoing #StopRansomware initiative that aims to educate and protect individuals and organizations from ransomware threats.
