State Senator Peter Durant, a Republican representing Worcester and Hampshire, has announced that he will be making a decision on a potential bid for governor in 2026 soon. During an appearance on WCVB-TV’s “On the Record” program, Durant stated that he is currently in discussions with his wife and other candidates before making a final decision. Incumbent Democratic Governor Maura Healey has already announced her plans to seek a second term.
Durant, who has been a vocal critic of the current administration’s migrant shelter policy and is leading an effort to repeal the state’s new gun reform law, could potentially enter a competitive GOP primary field. Other Republican candidates include former Baker administration official Mike Kennealy, Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, and venture capitalist Brian Shortsleeve.
Despite the challenges of running as a Republican in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, Durant remains optimistic about the opportunity to challenge Healey. With concerns about issues such as the shelter system and rising energy prices, Durant believes there is an opening for a strong challenge in the upcoming election.
A recent poll released by the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance Foundation indicated that 55% of respondents had a favorable opinion of Healey. However, Durant remains confident that any of the potential GOP candidates would be a better choice than the current administration. As he considers his options and consults with key stakeholders, Durant is positioning himself as a potential contender in the 2026 gubernatorial race.
