Massachusetts refuses request to discharge radioactive wastewater into Cape Cod Bay

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has rejected a request from Holtec International to dump 1.1 million gallons of radioactive wastewater from the closed Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station into Cape Cod Bay. The decision came after public outcry and thousands of comments supporting the protection of the bay as a sanctuary under the state’s Ocean Sanctuaries Act. Community Action Works, part of the Save Our Bay MA coalition, hailed the decision as a victory for the environmental and economic health of the Cape. The group emphasized the importance of protecting the bay and surrounding communities from potential harm. MassDEP, in its statement, reiterated its commitment to protecting the Commonwealth’s natural resources and ensuring a clean and safe environment for future generations. Holtec International was not immediately available for comment on the decision. The rejection of the permit request highlights the importance of community involvement in environmental decisions and the agency’s dedication to upholding environmental justice and equity for all residents of Massachusetts.
