A “mega den” of rattlesnakes has emerged from hibernation in northern Colorado, observable through a livestream by Project RattleCam. The initiative, which started in 2021 in California, allows viewers to watch hundreds of rattlesnakes basking in the sun as they return from winter dormancy. This year marks the second installment of the Colorado livestream, which has already attracted significant attention, including over 2.5 million views in its debut year.
Project RattleCam aims to educate the public about rattlesnakes while changing the negative perceptions often associated with them. Researchers, including students from California Polytechnic State University and Dickinson College, are studying the social dynamics of rattlesnakes, using their unique scale patterns. Livestreams also intend to highlight the snakes’ resilience; some observed this season have healed from severe injuries sustained before hibernation.
Looking ahead, Project RattleCam secured additional funding to expand eastward, with plans for a Pennsylvania livestream anticipated to launch in spring 2026. This new camera may also feature local species such as copperheads and black bears, enhancing the educational reach of the project. The initiative utilizes the livestreams to educate young students, integrating them into science curricula.
Currently, viewers can access the Colorado rattlesnake livestream 24/7 from May to October at RattleCam.org and Project RattleCam’s YouTube channel. The California livestream is expected to resume later this summer.
