Hillman and others had not previously inspected the area due to the long grass left for the horses. This incident highlights the dangers posed by Africanized bees, which were introduced to Brazil in 1956 and have since spread across the southern United States. Their highly defensive nature and tendency to swarm make them particularly hazardous.
