UMass Grads Encouraged to Embrace Curiosity Instead of Fear

UMass Amherst Celebrates 155th Commencement with Inspiring Messages for Graduates

Amherst, MA – On Friday, May 16, 2025, the University of Massachusetts Amherst kicked off its 155th commencement weekend at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, conferring degrees to over 6,200 undergraduates and nearly 2,900 graduate students. The sun shone brilliantly as keynote speaker David Korins, a UMass alumnus and acclaimed Broadway set designer, encouraged graduates to confront fear with curiosity. “You can shrink from it, or you can get curious,” he urged attendees.

Korins reflected on his own journey from student to a successful career, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and aligning one’s life with personal values. Recent graduates, including Sam Irvine, who returned to complete his degree after a hiatus, expressed gratitude for the support from faculty. First-generation graduates Xiomara Romani and Karen Santiago echoed the sentiment that their struggles were worthwhile as they anticipate their future careers.

Chancellor Javier Reyes reminded graduates that they are equipped to handle change and urged them to shape their own futures. Honorary degrees were awarded to Korins and Stephen Driscoll, a notable community leader and advocate. The ceremony also awarded scholarships and accolades to outstanding students, marking a significant milestone in their academic journeys.
