Philly Shipyard Set for Growth as U.S. Shipbuilding Revitalization Gains Momentum
Philadelphia, PA – Senator Dave McCormick and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently visited Philly Shipyard, underscoring its pivotal role in the Trump administration’s initiative to rejuvenate the American shipbuilding sector. During the visit, they projected an increase in employment at the shipyard, potentially expanding from 1,500 to thousands more jobs.
President Trump has prioritized this initiative, recently establishing a White House office dedicated to shipbuilding. Plans include modernizing major shipyards and boosting capacities at smaller facilities through a series of executive orders and upcoming legislation. A significant shift occurred last year when South Korean firm Hanwha Ocean Company acquired Philly Shipyard for $100 million, a move welcomed by U.S. Navy officials, indicating strong foreign interest in the U.S. maritime industry.
The administration’s strategy aims to rebuild domestic maritime industries for enhanced national security and economic stability, backed by a substantial portion of the latest defense reconciliation bill, which allocates $33.7 billion to improve shipyard infrastructure and acquire new vessels. Additionally, the new bipartisan SHIPS for America Act seeks to streamline processes and enhance recruitment within the maritime workforce, highlighting a comprehensive approach to revitalizing U.S. shipbuilding.
