Tragic Loss in Chelmsford: Community Mourns Enthusiast Richard Wetmore
Chelmsford, MA – A beloved member of the Chelmsford community, Richard Wetmore, 61, tragically lost his life in a late-night crash on June 9. Known for his vibrant Hawaiian shirts and passionate spirit, Wetmore’s truck struck a tree on Westford Street around 11 p.m. He was quickly transported to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Born on August 2, 1963, in Landstuhl, Germany, Wetmore was raised in Chelmsford, graduating from high school in 1981. He maintained strong connections with childhood friends and was known as a skilled carpenter and general contractor before becoming a dedicated building inspector for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Family members highlighted his commitment to safety and his professional integrity.
Wetmore married his wife, Paula, in 1992, with whom he would have celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary this August. Together, they raised a loving family, and Wetmore was especially proud of being a grandfather. Described as a devoted car, motorcycle, and boating enthusiast, he regularly participated in local car shows and enjoyed outings on Heart Pond, embodying a zest for life that was infectious.
An avid golfer, Wetmore was involved in multiple leagues and participated in charitable tournaments, often spending cherished moments on the greens with his father and friends. His family expressed that Wetmore constantly offered a helping hand, bringing positivity and laughter to all gatherings.
He is survived by his wife, children, granddaughter, parents, in-laws, and several nieces and nephews. Wetmore’s visitation will be held on June 18 at Dolan Funeral Home, followed by his funeral Mass at St. Mary Church in Chelmsford on June 19. His passing leaves a profound void in the community, as many remember him for his generosity and love for family.
