State Lawmaker Involved in Hit-and-Run Incident on Commute to Beacon Hill
Braintree, MA – Massachusetts Representative Steven Xiarhos, a Republican representing Sandwich, Barnstable, and Bourne, is thankful to have escaped serious injury following a hit-and-run incident on Route 3 in Braintree Wednesday morning. Just before 10 a.m., Xiarhos was en route to the State House from Cape Cod when his vehicle was struck from behind by a speeding driver. The collision narrowly avoided a nearby motorcycle, highlighting the potential dangers on the road.
In response to the incident, Massachusetts State Police apprehended 34-year-old Jacob Bennett in Quincy after he fled the crash scene. Although Xiarhos did not require hospitalization, his vehicle sustained significant damage. He was able to attend the State House session later that day.
“I am grateful to the MA State Police for their swift response,” Xiarhos stated. He expressed appreciation for the citizens who stopped to assist and provided crucial information for the investigation. Bennett faces multiple charges, including operating under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of a crash, negligent operation, and driving with a suspended license. He was released on $1,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Friday morning.
Reflecting on the incident, Xiarhos emphasized the importance of road safety, saying, “Incidents like this are a powerful reminder of how fast things can happen on the road. Please stay alert, drive responsibly, and look out for one another.” Having served 40 years with the Yarmouth Police Department, Xiarhos is no stranger to the unpredictability of driving conditions. The event serves as a timely reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant.
