Species at Risk Despite Increasing Numbers

A four-day-old baby giraffe was born at the Greenville Zoo on June 7, drawing attention just ahead of World Giraffe Day on June 21. The birth highlights ongoing conservation efforts, as evidenced by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation’s 2025 State of Giraffe report. This report reveals that better data collection and conservation initiatives are leading to improvements in some giraffe populations. Stephanie Fennessy, the Foundation’s Executive Director, noted that while conservation efforts are yielding positive results, many giraffe species remain at risk, with several needing a higher status on the IUCN Red List.

In 2016, giraffes were elevated from “Least Concern” to “Vulnerable.” The report indicates that there’s a strong case for classifying three of the four giraffe species as “Endangered” or “Vulnerable.” Notably, the Northern giraffe, one of the most threatened large mammals, has seen a nearly 20% population increase, with 7,037 remaining. The Reticulated giraffe’s numbers are also improving, with approximately 20,901 estimated, though data collection challenges persist in its native regions.

Southern giraffe populations have enjoyed a remarkable 50% increase over five years, currently estimated at 68,837, thanks to better surveys and increased awareness. The Masai giraffe population appears stable at around 43,926, with growth noted in specific areas like Rwanda and Zambia.

Dr. Julian Fennessy emphasized the necessity for urgent reassessment of giraffe statuses on the IUCN Red List, urging that tailored protection strategies are vital, as a one-size-fits-all approach will not suffice to safeguard these iconic creatures. The ongoing awareness and conservation efforts aim to protect giraffes from the threat of extinction while enhancing visitor experiences at the zoo.
