Massachusetts Declares Hurricane Preparedness Week Amid Storm Season
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed July 6-12 as "Hurricane Preparedness Week" in response to increasing tropical storm activity across the U.S. "With tropical storms becoming more frequent and intense, I encourage everyone in Massachusetts to prepare for the potential threats," Healey stated. This initiative emphasizes the significance of planning for hurricanes, especially as the Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) aims to inform residents, families, and businesses about crucial safety measures. Recent storms, such as Tropical Storm Chantal, underline the immediate need for preparedness, as such weather can impact areas even far from coastlines. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll highlighted the risks of dangerous winds and flooding statewide.
MEMA has developed resources including multilingual kits and safety tips available online, and engaged in community awareness efforts through digital billboards and buses. Director Dawn Brantley advised residents to take simple, cost-effective steps to prepare.
