Here’s the Cost of the Army’s June 14 Parade

The Army’s 250th anniversary parade in Washington, D.C., held on June 14, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s birthday, cost $30 million, with initial estimates between $25 million and $45 million. This massive event involved transporting numerous tanks and armored vehicles from Texas and included participation from approximately 7,000 soldiers, some in historic costumes. Warplanes and Army parachutists added to the spectacle before an audience of thousands.

Despite severe weather concerns, the parade began 30 minutes early. Security measures were extensive, as the event was classified as a “National Security Special Event,” necessitating heightened vigilance from the Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and local police. Authorities prepared by erecting 18.5 miles of fencing and installing 175 magnetometers to screen attendees.

Local government officials initially worried about potential damage to city infrastructure from the tanks. However, post-event assessments indicated that damage was minimal, with only one park curb along the Potomac crushed. The Army pledged to cover repair costs following concerns raised by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.

The parade’s timing and its perceived connection to Trump’s birthday faced criticism from opponents, including Democratic lawmakers, who argued it politicized the military and echoed autocratic displays seen in other nations. In response, Trump supporters organized “No Kings Day” protests nationwide.

In the lead-up to the event, the Army noted a 31% increase in incoming inquiries and a boost in social media engagement, indicating the parade successfully connected the public with the military, as stated by Army spokesperson Steve Warren. Despite controversies, the event remained a significant display of military pride.
