FBI Warns Massachusetts Residents of Impersonation Scams
Massachusetts residents are being urged to remain vigilant against a rise in scams involving impostors posing as law enforcement and government officials. The FBI’s Boston Division reported a concerning spike in fraudulent phone calls where scammers threaten victims with arrest unless they make immediate payments.
The FBI noted that in 2024 alone, over 500 Massachusetts residents lost more than $9 million to these scams, with a total of 778 complaints recorded across New England amounting to nearly $13 million in financial losses. Ted Docks, Special Agent in Charge, emphasized that scammers exploit fear and intimidation, preying on those anxious about law enforcement investigations.
The con artists often manipulate caller ID systems and craft messages with threats of legal consequences to coerce victims into sharing personal details or sending money. The FBI clarified that legitimate agencies never demand payment over the phone, nor do they threaten individuals with arrest.
Residents are encouraged to be skeptical of unsolicited calls, especially from unfamiliar numbers. The FBI outlined distinct warning signs of scams, including poor grammar or spelling in written communications and requests for payment through prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.
For verification, individuals questioning the legitimacy of a caller claiming to represent the FBI can reach out directly to the Boston office at 857-386-2000. The agency reminded citizens not to divulge personal information unprompted and to report any suspicions of fraud to local law enforcement and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Residents are advised to remain cautious and protect their financial and personal information to avoid falling victim to these deceptive schemes.
