Red Sox Release Walker Buehler, Open Roster Spot for Payton Tolle
Boston, MA – In a surprising move, the Boston Red Sox have released right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler, who had signed a one-year, $21.05 million contract with the team just last December. The news, first reported by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, was officially confirmed by the Red Sox.
The decision comes as the team aims to make room on both the 40-man and active rosters for rookie Payton Tolle, who is set to make his major league debut this Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tolle, regarded as the team’s top pitching prospect, will face off against Pittsburgh’s standout pitcher, Paul Skenes.
Buehler’s tenure with the Red Sox has been tumultuous. After a standout performance in the 2024 World Series where he struck out three batters in a tense ninth inning against the New York Yankees, Buehler struggled throughout the current season, posting a 7-7 record with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP over 22 starts. He was demoted to the bullpen just last week, following a disappointing outing where he allowed two runs in 2 ⅓ innings against the Yankees.
In addition to Buehler’s release, the Red Sox made two more roster moves on Friday, optioning outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia to Triple-A Worcester and recalling infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard.
The organization’s commitment to youth is clear as they bring Tolle, a second-round pick from TCU, into the spotlight. Fans and analysts alike await his performance as the team navigates the remainder of the season. Further updates on the roster changes and player performances are expected soon.
