Red Sox Release Walker Buehler Amid Playoff Pursuit
In a surprising move, the Boston Red Sox have released veteran right-hander Walker Buehler after a disappointing season. Buehler, who boasted a 5.40 ERA over 22 starts this season, struggled with consistency, prompting the team to transition him to the bullpen just a week prior to his release. Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the challenges faced, stating, “It’s tough… we expected more.”
The Red Sox are in a win-now mode, targeting a playoff berth for the first time since 2021. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow explained that the team could no longer afford to wait for Buehler to regain form, especially after injuries to other key pitchers. His release allows young prospect Payton Tolle to make his major league debut.
Buehler, a two-time World Series champion, was respected for his past postseason success, leaving the Red Sox to provide him an opportunity to join another team before the September 1 eligibility cutoff. Despite the disappointing end, Breslow hinted at the possibility of Buehler resurfacing with success elsewhere.
As the Red Sox adjust their roster, they look to stabilize their pitching staff amid a critical stretch of games.
