Police in Barnstable are currently investigating an incident in which a 7-year-old child was shot in the leg with a BB at a playground on the Cape on Thursday night. According to a press release issued on Saturday, authorities are considering the possibility that the child was struck by a BB from a BB gun, but are referring to it as an “unknown projectile” as they conduct further investigations.
Officers were called to a playground in the area of Mary Dunn Road and Independence Drive in Barnstable on Thursday at around 7:50 p.m. after receiving a report that a child had been hit in the leg with something. The child was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be an entry and exit wound near the shin. Thankfully, the child has since been released and is expected to recover.
While initial findings suggest that the child may have been struck by a BB from a BB gun, police are continuing their investigation to gather more information on the incident. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to reach out to Barnstable Detective Christopher Botsford at 774-339-0764 or 275@barnstablepolice.com.
