The first batch of F-16 fighter jets has arrived in Ukraine, fulfilling a long-standing wish of the country to rebuild its depleted air force. The F-16s, built by Lockheed Martin, are highly sought after by Ukraine for their destructive power and global availability. The fighter jets are equipped with a 20mm cannon and can carry a variety of weapons.
Ukrainian officials have been pushing for the F-16s for months, citing the need to defend against Russian missiles. The US has been supporting Ukraine by providing training for pilots and has already graduated the first group of pilots for operation of the jets.
In addition to the US, NATO allies Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have committed to providing Ukraine with more than 60 F-16s. However, Ukrainian officials estimate that at least 130 jets are needed to neutralize Russian air power, which is significantly larger.
