Judge approves closure of Steward hospitals in Dorchester and Ayer

The sale of the remaining six Steward hospitals in Massachusetts has brought concern and uncertainty to the community. Following a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge’s approval of the closure of Carney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Steward Health Care announced plans to expedite the hospital closures by August 31 due to financial constraints. The approval has sparked outrage among residents and caregivers, who fear the impact on healthcare services in the state.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge and State Senator Nick Collins have organized visits to the State House to save Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center, urging officials to keep the hospitals open. Despite efforts to challenge the closures, including a $30 million pledge from the state conditioned on sales agreements, the Judge enforced the law and approved the closures.

Steward Health Care, facing financial challenges and bankruptcy, continues to work on selling off or transitioning its hospitals. While the fate of Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center is sealed, attention has shifted towards saving the remaining six Steward hospitals in Massachusetts. Community rallies and court dates have been set to address the ongoing situation and ensure transparency throughout the process. With the closure of two hospitals looming, the future of healthcare services in the state remains uncertain.
