Body camera footage released recently shows police in Iowa stopping a man named George Hartleroad for a minor bicycle infraction, only to later discover that he was a convicted rapist wanted in Wisconsin for over 30 years. Hartleroad initially provided a false name and social security number to the officers, claiming to have lived in Iowa for two decades. However, officers eventually prompted him to reveal his true identity, leading to the discovery of his long-standing arrest warrant in Wisconsin. Hartleroad had been convicted of rape in a 1983 case and had served five years in prison before escaping a halfway house, remaining on the run ever since. Currently housed in the Dane County Jail in Madison, Wisconsin, Hartleroad is facing a charge of parole violation. West Des Moines police declined to comment on the warrant status from other agencies, while a spokesperson for the Dane County sheriff’s office had limited information on the specifics of Hartleroad’s case. Despite the arrest, USA TODAY was working to verify the details of Hartleroad’s conviction in Wisconsin based on state records.
