The Blue Sox suffered a heartbreaking loss in game one of the NECBL playoffs as the Gulls stormed back with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 10-8 on Thursday night. Valley scored five runs off Newport starter Aidan Coleman early in the game, including a two-RBI double by Anthony Scarabino. Despite efforts to rally back, Newport couldn’t overcome the deficit. Valley’s pitcher Shaw put on a solid performance, only giving up two runs in 5.0 innings. The Gulls extended their lead with a home run by Scarabino and an RBI single by Lucas Manning. Although the Blue Sox held a commanding 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, they couldn’t contain the Gulls’ late-game rally. Andrew Duncan’s grand slam and Jack Doyle’s go-ahead run secured the victory for the Gulls. Newport pitcher Drew Delucia threw 4.2 innings in relief, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Gulls’ offense. The Blue Sox will look to bounce back in game two of the series at MacKenzie Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Fans can tune in to the action on ESPN+.
