Earthquake near Bakersfield, California causes anxiety

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit the San Joaquin Valley late Tuesday, with the epicenter in Lamont, California, causing no immediate injuries or damage. This earthquake also had multiple aftershocks ranging from 3.7 to 4.7 magnitudes. It was felt as far as Los Angeles, around 104 miles southeast, with residents receiving emergency warnings on their cell phones just before it hit. Renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones noted that the quake was near the White Wolf fault but did not appear to be on it.

The most recent significant earthquake in California was a 6.4-magnitude quake near Ferndale in 2022. Some of the biggest earthquakes in California’s recorded history include a 7.9 magnitude in Fort Tejon in 1857, a 7.8 magnitude in San Francisco in 1906, and a 7.4 magnitude in Owens Valley in 1872.

During an earthquake, it is crucial to take precautions such as dropping to hands and knees, covering your head and neck, and finding shelter under a table or desk. If you are outside, stay outdoors away from buildings, and if you are driving, slow down, pull over, and stay in the vehicle until it is safe to move again. It is important to check for damage and injuries before resuming driving.
