Hawaii residents are wrapping up voting on Saturday, with congressional and legislative races setting the stage for November’s general elections. Democrats are expected to secure wins in the U.S. Senate and House primaries, with incumbent Senator Mazie Hirono and Representative Ed Case likely to secure nominations. On the Republican side, candidates such as Adriel Lam and Bob McDermott are vying to challenge Hirono. In the U.S. House races, Rep. Jill Tokuda and Rep. Ed Case are running unopposed in their primaries.
Hawaii voters will also be selecting candidates for various local races, including positions on the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and for mayors, prosecuting attorneys, and councilmembers in different counties. State legislative races are also heating up, with key matchups like House Speaker Scott Saiki facing a challenge from Kim Coco Iwamoto in the 25th District.
In the 36th District, incumbent Rep. Trish La Chica is up against political newcomer Ken Inouye, while voters in the 1st House District will encounter the unique situation of a deceased candidate, Rep. Mark Nakashima, still appearing on the ballot. Following the election, Gov. Josh Green will appoint a successor from a list of candidates provided by the Democratic Party.
Hawaii’s state primaries conclude on Saturday, with results expected to be announced in the evening. Registered voters can participate in any party’s primary, and the outcome will shape the political landscape for the general elections in November.
