Sheikh Hasina, Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Calls for Investigation into Protest Deaths and Property Damage

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for action against those involved in the violence and killings during last month’s protests in the country. Hasina, currently in exile in India, issued a statement through her son in the United States demanding a proper investigation and punishment for those responsible for the deaths of approximately 300 people during the unrest.

The statement comes shortly after a court in Dhaka ordered a probe into Hasina’s role in the death of a grocery shop owner who was hit by a bullet while crossing the street during the protests. Hasina’s supporters have been urged to gather in Dhaka to mark the anniversary of her father’s assassination on August 15.

Hasina and several members of her government, including the general secretary of her party, have been accused in the murder case. Other former officials, including the ex-law minister and an adviser, have also been arrested for allegedly instigating violence.

Student leader Nahid Islam, who is now part of the interim government, has called for Hasina to face trial for the killings that occurred during her time in office. Hasina’s son has indicated that she plans to return to Bangladesh once the caretaker government decides on holding elections.

The call for action against those responsible for the violence and deaths during the protests highlights the ongoing political tensions in Bangladesh and the challenges facing the country as it navigates a period of instability.
