The New England Patriots are taking a cautious approach with their potential franchise quarterback, Drake Maye, during this preseason. Despite being the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye has mainly served as the backup to Jacoby Brissett and has had limited playing time in preseason games.
However, despite the lack of reps, Maye has been praised for his dedication and steady progress by Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo mentioned that Maye has been studying and working hard to improve each day, even though he has not had many opportunities on the field.
During joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles, Maye had some ups and downs, showcasing both his talent with impressive throws and catching the attention of coaches with his need to improve on quick decision-making and pass protection. The Patriots’ offensive line struggles were highlighted during the practice as the Eagles managed to sack Maye multiple times.
Despite the challenges, Maye remains optimistic and views these experiences as valuable learning opportunities as he navigates his first NFL training camp. While the path to a starting role may take time, the young quarterback is focused on growth and development as he works towards securing a significant role with the Patriots.
