Trump declares civilian award superior to Medal of Honor

Veterans criticized former President Donald Trump for saying that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is “much better” than the military Medal of Honor, as recipients of the latter are often badly wounded or dead. Trump made these comments during a campaign event where he discussed awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dr. Miriam Adelson, a Republican Party donor. Trump’s comments were called “asinine” and disrespectful by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other politicians. The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, Sen. Jack Reed, called Trump’s insults towards wounded warriors and their families outrageous and a national embarrassment. Trump’s senior adviser defended him by claiming that he did more for veterans than the current administration. The Kamala Harris campaign also criticized Trump’s comments, stating that he knows nothing about service. The Medal of Honor is awarded to servicemembers who demonstrate gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. There are currently 60 living recipients of the Medal of Honor. Overall, Trump’s comments and past actions towards veterans have been widely condemned as disrespectful and unfit for a Commander-in-Chief.
