Eva Goodman, a homeless teenage girl, is suing Detroit Judge Kenneth King for violating her civil rights when he detained her, yelled at her, and threatened her with jail time after she fell asleep during a field trip to his courtroom. Goodman and her mother are represented by lawyers from Fieger Law and are also suing private security services at the court and two court officers. Judge King has been temporarily removed from his docket pending training. The lawsuit alleges multiple constitutional violations, including unreasonable search and seizures, being detained without due process, and being compelled to provide evidence against herself. The lawsuit argues that King acted outside of his authority as a judge and that there is no immunity for his actions in this case. The lawsuit seeks damages of over $75,000 for each of the eight alleged violations. The incident has caused emotional distress to Goodman, who does not want to leave her house since the incident. Video footage shows King berating Goodman and her classmates for their involvement in the situation. Wayne State University has also removed King from teaching classes. King has received death threats and is awaiting legal action in response to his actions.
