Three Sisters, a food access farm based in Ipswich, is making a difference in the North Shore community by providing fresh produce to neighbors facing food insecurity. Over 70 percent of the produce they grow reaches low-income individuals and food-insecure neighbors in over 18 towns and communities in Essex County. With food insecurity on the rise in Massachusetts, Three Sisters is seeing an increased need for fresh food.
To meet this demand, Three Sisters has entered into a 5-year land agreement with the town of Wenham, providing them with more designated farmland to grow on. This expansion will allow them to grow more food for those in need and provide access to fresh, chemical-free produce for food pantry visitors, who often lack access to such items. Executive Director Liz Green emphasized the importance of fresh, quality produce for individuals trying to make ends meet.
The farm is set to begin planting in Wenham in the spring of 2025, and Green believes this expansion will allow them to do much more. However, she also highlights the importance of community involvement in addressing food insecurity. Green expressed that there is room for everyone who cares about making a difference to join in the efforts. The focus is not just on the land, but on local communities coming together to support those in need. With increased collaboration and support, Three Sisters aims to continue providing fresh and nutritious food to those who need it most.
